We reinforce doors against forced entry. Forced entry is the most common way in which a thief enters a home or business. There are important steps to consider when reducing a forced entry attempt and it is best to have a professional locksmith service review your situation and concerns. Avalon Locksmiths is a professional locksmith service specializing in the prevention of unauthorized access to homes and business. We regularly repair damage from break-and-enters and failed burglary attempts and we know how actual thefts occur. Based on this experience we understand the real weaknesses in the security of a door . We install hardware appropriate  to correcting these security flaws.

The Process of Reinforcing a Door Against Forced Entry

Many years experience with repairing the damage of forced entry has taught us the best order of importance to door reinforcement. Each door has it’s own set of weaknesses and strengths as far as both resisting a physical attack and deterring an attack from occurring. Both resisting and deterring are important for prevention.

In general when we are reinforcing we are looking at the weaknesses of the door in this order:

  1. The quality and strength of the lock
  2. The strength of the door jamb where the lock engages
  3. The strength of the door around where the lock is installed
  4. The gap between the door and the door jamb

First we ensure our locks are deadbolts of a sufficient strength Grade. We recommend a commercial Grade 2 for most applications or a Grade 1 for higher security needs.

After ensuring the proper locks are installed, a wooden door jamb is usually reinforced with a longer and stronger strike plate. This security strike plate is mounted deeper and over a larger surface area and will spread out any force directed at the door. This prevents the door frame from breaking at the door jamb where the deadbolt and door latch engage the frame and can also be used to repair damage from a forced entry after it has occurred.

The next step in reinforcing a wood or steel-faced residential entry door is usually to install a wrap around plate that goes around the edge of the door where the door deadbolt and door handle are installed. This wrap around plate is sometimes called a door reinforcer. Door reinforcers strengthen a door from splitting out along the edge and can also be used to repair doors broken from this kind of damage. These plates are installed under the deadbolt as well as the door knob, lever or entry set.

Next we install latch guards which prevent against the door being pried open, spread from engaging the frame and from attacks directed at the latch bolt through the gap between the door and frame.

If the door is an in-swinging residential door we fit it with an interlocking latch guard which prevents doors from being pried open and the frame from being spread as it interlocks to the frame when the door is closed.

Outward swinging doors can be fitted with latch guards and full length astragals to prevent prying and to cover the gap where the door meets the frame. Some latch guards for out-swinging doors also have interlocking features.

We reinforce doors and repair doors using Door Security  Hardware:

    • We reinforce strike plates and repair broken door jambs with 12″ and 18″ security strike plates
    • We reinforce broken doors with door reinforcers, a wrap around plate that goes around the lock and/or door handle
    • We reinforce doors from prying attempts by installing latch guards on out-swinging doors and interlocking latch guards on in-swinging doors
    • We secure doors from forced entry by installing heavy duty door guards or door guardians on the inside of in-swinging doors
